Have Your Civil Liberties Been Violated?

I have a passion for defending the Constitution. It’s what inspired me to become an attorney and why I continue to practice law. Cases involving violations of civil liberties are of particular interest to me. That’s why I am an American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of Minnesota volunteer attorney and board member.

I am Howard Bass, a skilled Burnsville civil liberties attorney committed to defending the Constitution one case at a time in state and federal courts, both at the trial and appellate levels. What Is A Civil Liberty Violation?

Civil liberties are rights guaranteed by the state or federal constitutions. Violations encompass a number of topics, including:

  • Free speech
  • Free exercise of religion
  • Separation of church and state
  • Freedom of the press
  • Freedom of association and assembly
  • The right to petition the government for the redress of grievances
  • Equal protection of the laws
  • Due process of law
  • Voting rights
  • Excessive force
  • False arrest
  • Search and seizure
  • Cruel and unusual punishment

If you believe your civil liberties have been violated, contact me to discuss your situation. Together, we will fight to protect your rights.

Passion For Civil Liberties

As part of the ACLU of Minnesota, I argued successfully against the Minneapolis Photo Cop ordinance, which allowed the city to enforce red-light violations with cameras. The case was appealed to both the Minnesota Court of Appeals and the Minnesota Supreme Court, and I was successful in both courts.

I coordinated the efforts of the “Pinstripe Brigade,” a group of attorneys who volunteered to defend protesters at the 2008 Republican National Convention in St. Paul, Minnesota. I also successfully represented a driver charged with illegally honking her horn in support of peace activists in Burnsville and obtained a consent decree under which the city agreed not to prosecute other drivers for honking their horns in support of the protesters’ message. Every Constitution Day, I speak in high schools to educate students about the Constitution and the Bill of Rights.

Recognized Quality Representation In Minneapolis

Minnesota Law & Politics routinely includes me on its list of Super Lawyers and has recognized me as a “Top 40 Criminal Defense Super Lawyer.” Minnesota Monthly similarly includes me as one of the “Best Criminal Defense Lawyers in Minnesota.” I have also been selected by my peers for inclusion in “The Best Lawyers in America.”
